Savage Wilderness, our partners on the water, pioneered rafting and kayaking trips in Kenya and have established a beautiful, permanent camp on the upper reaches of the Tana River, just over an hour’s drive from Nairobi. The camp sits in a lovely setting right on the river with accommodation options to suit everyone including basic camping, bunk houses, luxury safari tents and cottages. Even if you are not interested in taking part in the adventures on the water it is still a lovely place to spend a couple of days. Being so close to Nairobi it is an excellent place to relax at the start or end of your trip.

The Tana River is a 'pool/drop' river where areas of calm water allow you to catch your breath after navigating stretches of class II to V white water. It provides a truly spectacular day of white water rafting. Depending on water levels you'll raft 8-16km of river. The trip starts with 3km of easy class II and III white water, with plenty of opportunity to gain practice in the paddle skills required to run the lower part of the river. A calmer 6km section follows, and a tranquil hour or so marvelling at the abundant bird life. Here you can cool off with a swim in the warm water.

The final 7km back to the campsite start with easy class III water where paddle commands are reviewed in advance of the final challenge! For now, there is no way back as you crank it up to face the big class IV and V rapids. Captains Folly, Can of Worms (named because of its four, successive 90 degree bends) and Sphincter Flexor come first before, subject to water levels, you "surf" in the "fish-eye" hole before swimming the next couple of minor rapids. Numerous smaller rapids bring you at last to the class 5 Spasm, a series of drops over 3/4km with a big surprise half way through! And finally from here, the hard work complete, a gentle 15 minute float brings you safely back to camp.

Kayaking course are run for all levels of ability from absolute novices to advanced instruction. All the equipment from kayaks, paddles, spray skirts, life jackets and helmets are provided.

Instructors and guides all hold relevant qualifications in their chosen field, as well as first aid qualifications and swift water rescue certifications. Staff receive regular training to keep them up to date in their respective activities.

For an extended adventure we can organise a 3 day expedition on the Athi River. Classified as one of the top ten river trips in the world, the Athi River provides a combination of exhilarating white water and stunning views of African wildlife in its natural habitat. This trip takes you along the border of Tsavo National Park, perfect for viewing bushbuck, giraffe, buffalo, elephants, crocodiles, monkeys, baboons and hippo with spectacular birdlife all the way. The Athi provides the ultimate river safari with nights spent moored at one of the many white sandy beaches at the side of the river.
