From Heaven to Hell and Back is a 10 day adventure spent visiting the Maasai Mara Reserve, walking across the Siana Plains and through the beautiful, scenic Loita Hills, then down and across a depression in the floor of the Rift Valley, in the burning heat of one of Kenya's hottest regions, before returning to the tranquillity of Wildebeest Camp's beautiful gardens in Karen, on the outskirts of Nairobi.

This trip has been planned to provide people with a very different experience from the norm. We have used our extensive knowledge of Maasailand to put together a unique offering that not only exposes people to the area's famous wildlife, but which also provides intimate contact with the people who live in one of Kenya's remotest areas. We take you to the end of the road and then beyond, showing you places that no other safari companies visit. You need to be walking fit to take part in this adventure although for most of the time we will have support vehicles with us so it is always possible to get a lift if the going gets too tough.

Some of the places we take you are included in our other safaris but the combination we have put together for this challenge is a one-off for this expedition. The very nature of what we are doing and where we are going means that whilst we do have a planned itinerary, it may be that things have to be changed on a day-to-day basis. For example we know that some of the route can be problematic to impossible if there is a lot of rain. This means people signing up for this trip should do so in the knowledge that things might have to change. This is part of the attraction of going into remote places. At all times the safety of our clients is paramount and we make decisions about what to do and where to go on this basis. The only thing we can guarantee is that you will have a real adventure in a beautiful and rarely-visited part of the world and you will meet people and see things during what is likely to be a once in a lifetime experience.

From Nairobi we start with a conventional wildlife viewing safari in Kenya's premier safari destination, the Maasai Mara Reserve. From here we move to the starting point for our walking adventure, close to the Maasai town of Ngoswani and the hillside village of Labentera and the camp at Ilparakuo. This eco-camp has been established by the local community on the side of a hill looking out across the Loita Hills.

From Labentera the group will be transported by vehicle, to a hidden valley near Leshuta and the brand new campsite of Entargotua. While here we will explore the forests and slopes in a part of the Loita Hills that receives no other visitors. From Entargotua another road transfer takes us down to Olorte in the southern end of the Loita Hills and the camp at Olkoroi by the Olkeju Arus River.

From Olorte the safari continues for about 20 kilometres through the hills and forest to the viewpoint at Enchorro Naibor where there are outstanding views out across the Rift Valley to Lake Natron and Shompole. On a clear morning it is sometimes possible to see Mt Kilimanjaro, over 150 kilometres away.

After spending a night under the stars the next day involves walking down over a thousand metres, on an old cattle track, before heading across the dry and barren country between Lakes Natron and Magadi towards the village of Shompole and a new camp on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River. This is an extremely remote area where the local people see few visitors and the camps we use are temporary affairs that have been set up purely for us.

The walk through this area can be extremely hot with little relief from the burning heat at night. After a night by the Ewaso Ngiro River people have the option of returning directly to Nairobi or spending another day walking around the Hot Springs at Lake Magadi. In either case the peaceful oasis of Wildebeest Camp provides the perfect place to relax after an epic adventure.
